Two taken to hospital following basement fire in Centretown West
Two adults were taken to hospital after a fire that started in the basement of an apartment building in Centretown West in the early hours of Sunday morning, according to the Ottawa Paramedic Service.
Ottawa Fire Services says firefighters received multiple calls shortly before 4 a.m., reporting there was smoke in the basement of a low-rise building in the 300 block of Cambridge Street.
When crews arrived at the scene and saw flames were coming out the basement window, they declared a working fire to request additional resources.
They then started extinguishing the fire by advancing a hose line inside the building.
The fire was declared under control at 4:11 a.m. It was contained to the area of origin before it could spread into the entire building, Ottawa fire says.
Firefighters then searched the structure for any occupants and did not find anyone inside.
The two adults were reported to be in stable condition, an Ottawa paramedics spokesperson said.
An OC Transpo bus provided shelter for the residents, while firefighters fought the flames.
Victim Services was also dispatched to provide the necessary help.
The investigation into what led to the fire is ongoing.
