Driver charged with impaired driving on Hwy. 417 registers nearly 4x legal limit, OPP says
An Ottawa resident facing impaired driving charges following a single-vehicle crash on the Queensway registered nearly four times the legal limit of alcohol, according to Ontario Provincial Police.
Police responded to reports of a single-vehicle crash on the Highway 417 off-ramp at Riverside Drive shortly before 5 a.m. Tuesday morning.
"Officers noted that the driver had an odour of an alcoholic beverage on his breath," the OPP said in a statement.
"An approved screening device was utilized, and the driver was transported to Ottawa Detachment for additional testing. The driver then registered nearly four times the legal limit."
The driver is facing charges of operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus), operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs, dangerous operation of a vehicle, and novice driver – blood alcohol concentration above zero.
"The OPP would like to remind everyone that if you plan to drink, have a plan for a ride home," the OPP said. "We can all work together to ensure everyone has a safe and happy holiday season."
Ontario Provincial Police say more than 100 motorists have been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs on eastern Ontario roads during its Festive RIDE campaign this holiday season.
"We are quite horrified at the numbers going up and not down," Valerie Keyes, Ottawa Valley Mother's Against Drunk Driving president, told CTV News Ottawa on Tuesday.
"From MADD’s perspective, what this means is that we've got a lot of work to do in educating the public about the dangers of impaired driving."
