Three square dancers were hurt when part of a ceiling collapsed in an east Ottawa community centre Thursday night.

The dance was happening at the Canterbury Community Centre on Arch Street when the collapse happened around 7:40 p.m.

The falling section of wood and drywall, which paramedics described as four by eight feet big, hit three of the approximately 30 dancers sitting nearby.

"I heard sort of like a roar and when I looked towards it, it was just all coming down in one piece," said Shirley Nixon. "And it just went 'kaboom!'"

"We're all still shaking because if we had been in the same spot we were in about three, four minutes before that, we would all be dead," said her husband Ransom Nixon.

A 74-year-old female suffered cuts to the top of her head, with paramedics describing her as "slightly confused" afterwards.

Another 73-year-old female had cuts and bruises on her head and cheek, with a 73-year-old man getting cut on the top of his head.

All three were taken to hospital in stable condition and have since been released.

However, one remains in care.

The recently-renovated building serves a lot of different purposes, including a daycare.

"A lot of people use that facility on a daily basis," said Ottawa city councilor Peter Hume. "I'm quite concerned we had this incident and we'll make sure that whatever action needs to be taken, is taken."

Former engineer King Jean said he was worried about the ceiling supports.

"It looked like they were using approximately three-inch nails on just a number of them, but not that many, and some of them looked like they were completely sheared off," he said.
