The pit bull that attacked a 16-month-old girl and disfigured her face has been euthanized.
Ottawa police say no criminal charges will be laid after a baby girl was attacked by a pit bull in Ottawa's Nepean area, Sunday morning.
Paramedics and police were called to the 90's block of Draffin Court, near Woodroffe Ave. and Baseline Rd., shortly after 9:00 a.m.
When they arrived, they found a 1-year-old girl suffering from multiple severe facial lacerations. The infant was rushed to hospital in serious but stable condition.
She underwent surgery Sunday afternoon at CHEO.
Police say the family was playing with the dog inside their home when it attacked the child.
Neighbour Beatrice Mushanga says the pit bull did not belong to the family, who owns two other dogs.
She says the family was looking after the dog for a few days to try and rehabilitate it, because the owner, a family friend, was having trouble training it.
Police secured the dog.
A pit bull ban has been in effect in Ontario since 2005. Anyone who owned a pit bull before the ban was allowed to keep them. Owners are required to have the dogs spayed or neutered. If they're out in public, the dogs have to be muzzled and on a leash.
According to Ottawa Bylaw the owner admits the dog is indeed a pit bull. The maximum penalty under the Ontario Dog Owners' Liability Act is a $10-thousand fine.
Sources say the pit bull was originally from Quebec.
