Police have identified the 64-year-old man who drowned in a west Quebec lake during a fishing trip Thursday.

Police say Andre Benoit of Gatineau wasn't wearing a life-jacket when his boat capsized on McGregor Lake, near Val-des-Monts, Que.

Another passenger who was in the boat when it flipped survived the incident. Police say that passenger was wearing a life-jacket.

This is the second death on McGregor Lake within the last week.

A 29-year-old woman, who was also not wearing a life-jacket, died when her canoe tipped early Saturday morning.

Reminder to wear your life-jacket

The deaths are prompting calls for boaters to wear life vests heading into the first long weekend of the boating season.

"We're hoping that when people hear stuff like this, this is what makes them realize 'Gee, really I should be wearing my life-jacket,'" Canadian Red Cross spokesperson Tracey Braun told CTV Ottawa.

The agency says every year 200 people drown while boating on Canadian lakes. Braun says 90 per cent of those people weren't wearing life-jackets properly.

She says the May long weekend is when drowning reports start pouring into the agency.

"Without (a life-jacket) you're not going to be able to make it to shore," she said.

Braun also reminds boaters that life-jackets have shelf lives and should be checked for buoyancy.

"You need to replace your life-jackets; make sure they're in good condition; make sure that zippers and buckles actually work."
