Ottawa Mayor Larry O'Brien is refuting a newspaper report that quoted him saying he isn't "counting on a win" in Monday's election.

"I think that was taken out of context. I said if you 'believed' the numbers that were out in the poll that you wouldn't like the chances, they didn't look good," O'Brien said on Thursday.

"And quite frankly -- what I'm saying and what I've always said -- is you only trust your own polls."

A Leger Marketing poll published in the Ottawa Sun Wednesday showed O'Brien far behind Jim Watson in the race for mayor. In fact, the numbers suggest he's in a fight with Clive Doucet for second place.

Although O'Brien says he intends to win a second term in office, he's already booked a vacation to the Caribbean right after the election.

O'Brien says he's been planning the cruise for the last six months. He defended booking the vacation on Thursday, saying he plans to report to work at Ottawa City Hall before and after his vacation.
