A commemorative plaque showing Eric Leighton in a hockey uniform now adorns the hallway at the Walter Baker arena in Barrhaven.
The plaque was unveiled Monday by Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson and Councillor Jan Harder.
Eric's parents say the plaque is a fitting tribute to their son who spent hours on the ice in Barrhaven playing his favourite sport.
Sheri Leighton says this day brings back some vivid memories as it was three years ago that her son lost his life in a shop class explosion at Mother Teresa High School.
"It was about this time now that we were at the hospital just waiting on news what the results were", said Sheri.
The Leightons also plan to mark the third anniversary with a visit to their son's gravesite.
