Firefighters rescue woman from Ottawa River near the Hull Marina

A woman was rescued from the icy waters of the Ottawa River near the Hull Marina on New Year's Day.

The Gatineau Fire Service says passers-by heard a woman screaming from the water just after 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. The woman was "clinging to ice near the docks" of the marina, according to fire officials.

When firefighters arrived on scene, they were able to rescue the woman from the ice with the help of an inflatable boat.

The victim was brought back to shore and transferred to the care of paramedics. She was taken to hospital with signs of hypothermia.

The Gatineau Fire Service says it's not clear why the woman had ventured onto the ice at the Hull Marina.

Police and fire officials in Ottawa and Gatineau are warning residents that "no ice is safe ice" following the mild weather over the Christmas and New Year's holidays.

"Cold water temperatures at this time of year can prevent even strong swimmers from escaping once they’ve fallen through the ice," the Ottawa Police Service said in a post on X.

The Ottawa Fire Service has responded to four ice rescues involving pets over the past week, including on Monday when a dog named Tika was pulled from the Ottawa River in the city's east end.

Deputy Fire Chief Louise Hine-Schmidt says people need to stay off the ice and keep pets on a leash near icy waters.

"Especially now with theses fluctuating temperatures, you need to stay off it entirely and the most important thing with pet rescues is don't go after your pet yourself," Hine-Schmidt said.

Officials say to call 911 if your pet or a person goes in the water.
