Firefighters escape injury after floor collapses while battling bungalow fire in Ottawa's west end
Two firefighters escaped injuries after the floor collapsed while they were battling a fire in a bungalow in the Ridgeview neighbourhood in Ottawa's west end.
A passerby called 9-1-1 just after 7:37 a.m. Friday, reporting smoke coming from the doors, windows and chimney of a home on Southwood Drive, near Iris Street.
The Ottawa Fire Services says firefighters confirmed there was a fire in the basement of the home, which had spread to the rest of the structure.
"Firefighters made their way inside and to the fight the fire and the first floor collapsed with two Firefighters going down into the basement," Ottawa Fire Services said on X.
"Both Firefighters were able to self-rescue and did not sustain any injuries. Following the collapse, all firefighters were evacuated out of the structure and fought the fire from the outside."
The fire spread from the basement throughout the interior walls and the attic of the home.
The homeowners were out of town at the time of the fire.
Investigators are searching for the cause of the fire.
This was the seventh fire Ottawa firefighters have responded to this week.
Three people have been displaced following a Thursday morning fire on Ron Kolbus Private. Firefighters responded to a call for a fire in the dryer at a three-storey building.
Ten people were displaced by a fire in a townhouse on Ogilvie Road on Tuesday morning.
