Eight people are homeless after a Christmas night fire destroyed a row of houses at 6822 Jeanne D'Arc Blvd. in Ottawa's east end.

Fire officials say the fire started just after 11:30 Saturday night and took nearly two hours to quell.

Sixty firefighters and 24 fire vehicles were needed to battle the three-alarm blaze.

Spokesperson Marc Messier says the fire appears to have started in or near one of the chimneys, causing an estimated $900,000 in damage.

It is not known when the residents will be able to return home. As of Sunday morning they were being looked after by the Salvation Army and Red Cross.

No injuries were reported.
