A 12-year-old boy is being recognized by the governor general and city council for his incredible courage and quick thinking that helped save his mother.

Jeron Poirier was with his mother when she drove over black ice on Colonel By Drive in February, causing her to lose control of the vehicle, breaking through a barricade and flipping her SUV onto the frozen Rideau Canal.

After the crash, Jeron scrambled to see if his mother was okay. She was trapped and badly injured. Jeron quickly got out of the vehicle and ran for help.

Mayor Larry O'Brien presented Jeron with a framed governor general's certificate of commendation on behalf of Governor General Michaëlle Jean on Wednesday.

The young boy was recognized for being instrumental in helping with his mother's rescue.
