For the second time in less than a month, fire has destroyed part of a play structure at Aydelu Park in Aylmer.
Gatineau Police said the latest blaze at Aydelu Park Tuesday night was deliberately set.
“It's a place where people bring their children to play,” said Kristina Hull, a mother who frequently brings her child to the park.
“It's unfortunate that maybe people have nothing better to do than go around seeing fires where other people find enjoyment.”
Gatineau Police said accelerants were found at the scene.
Many kids came to the park Wednesday to play, but couldn’t because of the extensive damage.
“I’m sad…this is my favourite park,” said one young boy.
“I’ve been there a lot when I was a kid with all my friends and it’s all ruined,” said another.
Ginette Lebrun lives in the area and saw both fires. She said surveillance cameras should be installed in the park
“For the protection of our kids and our houses and there's trees here. If [the trees would have] caught on fire, the houses would have too,” said Lebrun.
Damage to the play structure is estimated at $40,000. Canadian Tire has offered a $15,000 contribution to help rebuild the playground.
