A 10-year-old boy is dead after a head-on crash near Prescott Saturday night. The driver, his father, is in hospital in serious condition.
Grenville County Ontario Provincial Police said they were dispatched to a collision on County Road 2, in Augusta Township, shortly before 6 p.m.
Police said a Toyota Prius was traveling westbound on County Road 2 when it entered the eastbound lane and struck a Ford F-150 travelling eastbound. Prior to impact, the Toyota was negotiating an uphill left curve and the Ford a downhill right curve.
The father, a 47 year old male from Augusta Township, who was driving the Toyota, was transported by ambulance to hospital with serious injuries.
“The 10 year old passenger was also transported with life threatening injuries and was actually transported to a secondary hospital where he was later pronounced dead,” said Const. Cathy Lindsey.
The driver of the Ford, a 55 year old male from North Grenville, was transported by ambulance to hospital and has since been released.
Justin Jager, an off-duty firefighter, was first on scene after he heard the crash from inside his kitchen.
Jager said he phoned 9-1-1, and then broke the window to gain access to the young boy in the back seat of the Toyota.
“I broke the windows in the car and extricated him from the car, carried him over to the end of the driveway and performed CPR with some other people who were on scene at that time until EMS arrived,” he said.
Neighbours say this stretch of road has long been a concern in the community.
“This curve, from my recollection, there’s been five accidents… so they’ve been working on the road and trying to make it better - but people don’t worry about the speed,” said Doug Bagguley, who lives across street from the scene of the accident.
The OPP technical collision unit is investigating.
