Two dogs were put down by police Saturday morning in Orléans after a woman was attacked and another man was injured coming to her aid.
Witnesses describe them as large pit bull-type dogs.
The attack happened near the corner of Lamoureux Drive and des Épinettes Avenue around 11:15 a.m. Witnesses say the woman had just walked onto Lamoureux when the dogs approached her on the sidewalk. They began biting her on the arms and eventually dragged her to the ground. Tina Lavoie-Deschamps was sleeping in her home nearby "I woke up to a lady screaming and then cars honking like crazy. So I ran outside and realized there were two huge pitbulls attacking her," she says.
According to witnesses, several people in vehicles began honking at the dogs. Two men, one wielding a broom and the other a shovel, managed to eventually chase the dogs away so the woman could climb into one of the cars.
Ottawa Paramedics say a 25-year-old woman has taken to hospital with severe lacerations to both arms, her head, face, back and buttocks. A 66-year-old man who attempted to help had a deep cut to his left knee. Both were in stable condition.
Police quickly found the dogs and shot them, one on nearby Duvernay Drive and the other several blocks away on 10th Line Road. "The dogs were put down due to what happened and they were still aggressive in nature when they were spotted by the officers," says Acting Sgt. Wayne Wilson of the Ottawa Police Service.
Wilson says the dogs had collars but no tags or I.D. indicating who the owner is. The Police and Ottawa By-law Services are continuing to investigate.
