Thousands of people in Ottawa remain without power after strong winds toppled trees and brought down power lines.
The largest outages are in Kanata North, West Carleton, Barrhaven, Gloucester-South Nepean and Alta Vista. Crews are currently working to restore power to all affected residences and businesses. According to the Hydro Ottawa website, power will be back to some buildings during the overnight hours, while others will have to wait until early Tuesday morning.
In the Byward Market, scaffolding along a pedestrian walkway started to collapse because of the wind. Police and fire crews closed the walkway and shutdown Dalhousie St. between York St. and George St. because of safety concerns.
There were multiple reports of trees falling on houses and others blocking roads. On Deschenes St., a small tree crashed through the railing of a deck and onto a house. No one was hurt.
Emergency officials are reminding the public that downed power lines can be live. People should stay well back and inform the city by calling 3-1-1.
