The owner of a local meat shop is apologizing for an attempted marketing stunt that compared Hillary Clinton to a turkey and poked fun at Donald Trump’s alleged groping of women.
The sign at Saslove’s Meat Market in Wellington West advertised the “Hillary Clinton Package: 1 small turkey breast, 2 large turkey thighs, and 1 left wing” and also promoted the “Trump Grab a Rump” package.
The sign received backlash after being posted to the store’s Facebook page, and was taken down Thursday afternoon.
“I know I shouldn’t have put it up in the first place, and I really regret it,” owner Joel Diener said in an interview. “I’m not proud of it. I had a moment of levity today that I thought we could just poke fun of the election itself, not the people. That backfired.”
Diener said he saw the Clinton idea on the Internet, but came up with the Trump one himself. He said he didn’t intend to malign anyone personally or cause any offence; he was just trying to poke fun at the entire election process in the U.S., which he said is a “farce.”
Diener said he’s concerned about the damage the sign may cause to his business. An apology on the Saslove’s Facebook page humbly apologized for any ill feelings the sign may have caused.
“As you all know, we are a local business dedicated to our community and in no way do we endorse any type of misogynistic, belittling, shaming or bullying behavior,” it reads. “In our misguided amateurish attempt at political satire of the American political situation we went too far.”
