Residents east of Ottawa are getting together to try to get rid of a dump planned for Russell Township.

Taggart/Miller wants to transform a quarry in the area into a large waste diversion site.

However, people who live in the area say the project needs to be called what it is -- a dump.

"Certainly, our quality of life will diminish; the land values will drop. They have already dropped," said Walter Cholowski, president of Dump the Dump.

Concerned residents have launched a campaign to stop the landfill, warning that more than 200 acres of land could soon be covered with more than 200,000 tonnes of garbage.

They've also erected signs in the community saying: "Dump the dump" and "Dump it now."

"We have to be the voice that questions it and says, ‘No, I don't think that's quite right and here's why,'" said campaign organizer Laurie McCannell.

The residents are concerned about air quality, water quality and the health of their community.

The Taggart/Miller group held an open house to discuss the project in November. At the time, the company said the public had misconceptions about the proposed development.
