RCMP have charged two former government researchers at the Canadian Food Inspection Agency after an attempt was made to export 17 vials of dangerous pathogens.
Police say they arrested Dr. Klaus Nielsen last October as he was heading to the Ottawa International Airport.
Dr. Nielsen had vials in his possession which police say were found to contain live brucella bacteria that can " infect humans or livestock".
RCMP dubbed their investigation Project Sentimental.
It also involved the Ottawa Police Service, first responders, and several federal government agencies.
The investigation focused on an attempt to commercialize intellectual property belonging to the CFIA to a private commercial partner.
Dr. Nielsen was charged with Breach of Trust by a public officer.
RCMP believe he was on his way to China when he was arrested.
His next court appearence is set for April 17, 2013.
A Canada wide warrant has been issued for researcher Wei Ling Yu.
RCMP spokesman Sgt. Richard Rollings told CTV through an e-mail that police believe Ms. Yu is currently in China.
