A 26-year-old man is being held for questioning in connection with the city's first homicide of the year.

Police have not laid any charges, and have not identified the suspect.

However, neighbours have identified the male victim as Denis Mitrow, an Ottawa man in his early 50s.

His body was found in a basement apartment on Jolliet Avenue near Beechwood Avenue, east of the city's downtown core at about 12:20 p.m. on Thursday.

Police are calling the death 'suspicious.' The major crime unit is leading the investigation.

An autopsy was scheduled for Friday to determine the man's cause of death.

Neighbours say Mitrow lived in the apartment with his girlfriend. They often played loud music, and police had visited their home before.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Ottawa police at 613-236-1222 ext. 5493 or Crime Stoppers at 613-233-TIPS.
