A 68-year-old Ottawa man died after he got caught in Sunday night's storm on Lac La Blanche in west Quebec.

The man was alone in a paddleboat when the vicious storm swept through the region Sunday night. He was apparently not wearing a life jacket.

Quebec provincial police have identified the man as Ronald Thompson.

Thompson had been enjoying an evening of harp music with other cottagers by the lake when the violent storm swept in.

That's when the cottagers chose to seek cover. Thompson got in his paddleboat and the water quickly turned from serene to deadly.

Thompson's boat filled with water and capsized. He never made it back to shore.

It is currently unclear whether Thompson drowned or had a heart attack.

Lac La Blanche is located near Mayo, Que., about 60 kilometers northeast of Ottawa.
