A 23-year old Ottawa man has been charged for allegedly strangling his seven-week old Rottweiler puppy.
The Ottawa Humane Society received a call from a concerned citizen around 10 a.m. on April 14. They reported screaming and sound of punching and choking. The OHS arrived on scene to find the dog in need of emergency treatment.
“She was in a serious, life-threatening state. She was so unstable, we weren’t sure she was going to make it,” says Dr. Shelley Hutchings, OHS chief veterinarian in a press release.
Hutchings says the dog’s injuries were consistent with being choked. She showed signs of brain trauma but has since been examined by a neurologist who can’t find permanent brain damage.
The puppy, named Sadie by OHS staff, stabilized after a day of treatment and continues to recover at the facility.
Dylan Sardinha, has been charged with two counts under the Criminal Code of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal. His court date is set for June 16.
