A $1 million donation for the Wabano Centre kicked off the fundraising for a $15-million centre that will be a gathering place for Ottawa's more than 40,000 aboriginals.
The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada penned the large cheque to help out the community, which says some aboriginals have to live in third-world conditions in different areas of the country.
The new centre aims to help women in particular: more aboriginal infants die compared to the general population, and
there are more native mothers under the age of eighteen.
Aboriginal leaders say it's time to change that and create a centre that will aid and educate.
The expanded centre opens in 2012.
