The company that wants to transform a quarry in Russell Township into a large waste diversion site tried to assure residents at a public meeting that the project will benefit the area.

The Taggart/Miller group held an open house at the Russell Arena to discuss their plans with residents on Thursday. The company wants to transform a shale quarry into a new landfill.

However, the project is heavily criticized by Russell residents. Angry homeowners swarmed the meeting Thursday night, expressing concern that the dump might affect their well water.

Residents are also concerned that property values will plummet and the landfill will bring unwanted truck traffic to their neighbourhoods.

The Taggart/Miller group has said the public has misconceptions about the proposed development.
