OPP warn of scammers using name of former tow truck company in Bancroft, Ont. area
Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in Bancroft, Ont. are warning drivers of a fake tow truck company that charges for services but never shows up.
Police say the warning comes after they received multiple reports from people alleging they’re “being ripped-off when they call a supposedly local number found online for a tow truck.”
According to the reports, police say, drivers have made very high payments by credit card over the phone before the arrival of a tow truck.
“Then, either no tow truck ever shows up, or a real local company arrives. The local operators are either paid a small percentage by the initial company or they must charge for services they provide,” the OPP warned on X.
In a statement to CTV News Ottawa Thursday, police said the scammers “have been using a former local towing company’s name. To release that name would not be allowed and would not be fair to the owners of the former company.”
Police say they will provide further information when they lay charges.
The investigation is ongoing.
Officers are asking people in the Bancroft area and eastern Ontario to familiarize themselves with their rights before calling a towing company.
• Before you pay, make sure the operator can provide an itemized invoice.
• You have the right to decide who can tow your car and to what location.
• Your insurance company might be able to give direction about tow companies, repairs and car rentals.
• Make sure a “permission to tow” form must is signed before the towing process starts.
• Make sure you receive a receipt for the tow services.
• You have the right to pay by credit card if you choose.
• Do not accept offers to store your car at “a tow compound unless directed by your insurer.”
• Do not sign a blank contract or take referrals from tow companies.
