The Ontario governnment  will not back Kettle Island as the location for a new east end bridge.

Transportation Minister Glen Murray made the surprise announcement in front of the Montfort Hospital today.

Murray was joined by two east end Liberal MPPS' who opposed the Kettle Island option.

Madeleine Meilleur and Phil McNeely vowed to fight the National Capital Commission's recommendation to link Ottawa and Gatineau at Kettle Island.

The Montfort Hospital also blasted the Kettle Island location.

Hospital officials say more lanes of traffic would've caused severe problems for  ambulance and patient response times.

The Manor Park and Rockcliffe Park community associations' also opposed the Kettle Island route.

The National Capital Commission has spent years studying different corridors for a new east end bridge.

Just last month, it recommended a new bridge linking the Aviation Parkway in Ottawa to Montee Paiement in Gatineau.
