Friends have identified the 64-year-old man struck and killed by a dump truck in Ottawa's downtown Wednesday as Roland Weiss.

Weiss was a long-time mail clerk and messenger at Gowlings law firm.

He leaves behind two brothers and is being remembered as a "quiet, gentle soul."

The collision that took his life happened at about 12:30 p.m. at the busy corner of Laurier Avenue and Metcalfe Street. Emergency crews found Weiss trapped under the truck's axle when they arrived on scene.

He had no vital signs.

The driver of the dump truck spent much of Wednesday afternoon with a counsellor. He was turning right onto Metcalfe Street from Laurier Avenue when he struck Weiss.

Laurier Street was closed for several hours between O'Connor, Metcalfe, Gloucester and Elgin streets.
