Luna is Ottawa's most popular pet name in 2024, again

Pet-lovers stuck with tradition this year, with Luna ranking as the top name for Ottawa felines and canines again.

Pet-sitter website Rover.com released its 12th annual Top Names Report, featuring the most popular and top trending names in the city and across Canada for 2024.

This year's list had Luna topping the chart for the most popular female cat and dog name in Ottawa, a trend also seen across Canada. Charlie, Daisy, Bella and Bailey followed as the top names for dogs. Luna, Lily, Bella, Charlie and Milo were the top five names for cats.

In 2023, Luna, Charlie, Bella and Milo made the top five list for top dog names, while Teddy and Molly ranked lower this year.

Ottawa saw some new trends for pet names. Rufus saw a 347 per cent increase for dogs from the year before and Peanut was up 612 per cent for cats.

Pet names inspired by food and Greek gods were popular this year. Clementine, Cookie and Kiwi saw high increases for cats in the food category while, Apollo and Athena were also popular.

Rover says the results are based on analysis of millions of user-submitted names provided by pet parents.

The most popular male dog name across Canada was Charlie for the sixth year in a row. Leo held the top spot for the third consecutive year for male cats. Luna ranked number one overall across the country for the sixth consecutive year overall.

The pet platform noted many pet parents were inspired by pop culture "legends," with Star Wars-related names like Yoda and Binx a popular choice for parents. Characters from video games also appeared to influence names this year, with Kirby and Ozzie cracking the list, as well as beloved comic book characters like Batman.
