Investors who win the bid to redevelop LeBreton Flats could be looking at fees of up to $300 million dollars to clean up the site, sources tell CTV Ottawa.
The National Capital Commission says they do not have data to show how much the cleanup to deal with contaminated soil and waste from the site, but sources say the cost could be anywhere between $250 to $300 million dollars.
Last February the NCC released a request for proposals to four groups pre-qualified to submit detailed plans for the redevelopment of the federal land. After months of silence, the NCC published two proposals online on December 15th. Only DCDLS Group, formerly Devcore Group, and RendezVous LeBreton Group submitted a proposal.
Before it was flattened in the 1960s, LeBreton Flats was a bustling industrial area with breweries, rail lines and a strong lumber industry. Most of the community, however, was destroyed during the big fire of 1900.
The head of the NCC told 580CFRA that the scope of this redevelopment is like nothing Ottawa has seen before. Sources say the cost of these projects, which will remain secret until the public consultation Tuesday, will be in the billions of dollars. The bids include international, local and national investors.
The two groups will present their bids to the public at the War Museum on Tuesday and Wednesday.
