Jack Tobin has been granted day parole during his three year jail term for killing his friend in a 2010 drunk driving crash.

He can serve that parole once a space opens at a halfway house or similar institution, which could take between two to four weeks.

The son of former Newfoundland and Labrador premier Brian Tobin pleaded guilty to impaired driving causing death in May in the death of his close friend Alex Zolpis on Dec. 24, 2010.

Tobin has served about six months of that sentence.

Zolpis died after he was pinned under a truck in a downtown Ottawa parking garage.
