iPod users across Ontario are being warned of the possibility their music players could make them the target of a personal robbery.

The warning comes as an Ottawa murder trial is hearing Michael Oatway, 22, was allegedly killed on an OC Transpo bus in 2006 because he wouldn't hand over his iPod.

Police say the high costs and popularity of iPods make the gadgets one of the newest and hottest targets for thieves.

"I know people who've put it down for a second, turned around and it's been gone," said one Ottawa resident.

Police say the best way to stay off a mugger's radar is to conceal the device and keep it close to your body, so it's more difficult for someone to grab.

Other tips include:

  • Being aware of your surroundings
  • Ditching the signature white earphones
  • Buying a concealing device to hide your iPod

Still, Ottawa police say if you're approached by a thief, the safest way to deal with the incident is to hand over your iPod.

"Give it away. Do not create a confrontation to try and protect a piece of equipment," Const. Jean-Paul Vincelette told CTV Ottawa.

"There's no piece of equipment out there that's irreplaceable. Therefore, don't fight for a piece of machinery. It's better to walk away with your health."
