Power has been restored to thousands of Beacon Hill residents after a massive transformer fire Friday night, but Hydro Ottawa is still asking area customers to conserve energy through the weekend.

The blaze on Shefford Road in Ottawa's east end left about 5,500 hydro customers without power in Beacon Hill.

Flames as high as 60 feet began shooting up just after 6 p.m. at the hydro enclosure in Canotek Business Park. Thick black smoke could be seen several miles away.

No injuries were reported, and the fire was contained to the transformer station. But several intersections were without traffic lights.
