Compost and electronics will be going into different garbage categories starting Jan. 1. Here's what you need to know about the changes.

Green bins

Household compost, kitty litter, fireplace ashes, leaves from the yard and other "natural" items (here's the complete list) will go into a specially marked green bin that you should already have at your residence.

If you don't, please contact 3-1-1 or go to a client service centre to get one of the bins.

Green bins will be collected weekly in the spring, summer and fall and every two weeks during the winter.

On average, it will cost $38 per household -- that's $13.4 million across the city -- to run this program every year. The organic waste facility in Ottawa won't be functional until Jan. 27, meaning the waste will temporarily be shipped to Kingston and Moose Crerek facilities.

"I'm sure once (residents) start using it and realize how easy it is to use that, people will embrace the program," says Marilyn Journeaux, the City of Ottawa's waste service manager.

Electronics

In addition, the city will no longer accept these items for curbside removal:

  • Televisions
  • Desktop computers and terminals
  • Monitors
  • Laptop computers
  • Desktop printers
  • Fax machines
  • Disk drives
  • CD-ROM drives
  • Keyboards and mice

Ottawa-area residents can drop off these items at one of several locations for free.
