A funeral service for an Ottawa-based Mountie killed in Haiti will be held at the Notre Dame Basilica on Wednesday.

Supt. Douglas Coates’ body was found in the rubble of a 7.0-magnitude earthquake to hit the island nation on Jan. 12.

He was repatriated at CFB Trenton last week. A funeral service for Coates will take place at the Notre Dame Basilica at 385 Sussex Drive in Ottawa at 1 p.m.

Although members of the public are invited to attend, residents are advised seating will be extremely limited. A private burial will follow.

Coates was stationed in Haiti as part of a United Nations training mission. He was one of two RCMP officers killed in the earthquake.

His body was found in the rubble of the United Nations headquarters in Port-au-Prince on Jan. 16. He leaves behind his wife Lise and their three children, Julie, Mathieu and Luc.

Coates' joined the RCMP in 1978, and was first stationed in Haiti in 1993. He returned to the country several times, winning service medals for his work. He was named the United Nations acting commissioner in 2009.
