Hundreds of faithful walked through Ottawa Friday, marking the most somber day on the Christian calendar.

The Good Friday procession went from St. Patrick's Basilica on Kent Street to the Notre Dame Cathedral by the National Gallery, to mark the day Christians believe Jesus Christ died on the cross.

Good Friday is when Jesus left us and sacrificed everything for us," said one walker. "The fact that Ottawa celebrates that is important."

"It's an emotional day, the feeling expands . . . it just intensifies with the more people you experience it with," another said.

Four-year-old Maria Rose was taking in the walk for the first time with her mother.

"I really see it as such a blessing to be able to go with my daughter and show her what we believe as Christians," her mother said. "We are remembering the love of Christ for each one of us."

For those who have been doing the walk for years, they said it's still an important reminder of their beliefs.

"It's just helping us remember what he went through, how he died for us and how he was risen," said one of the participants.

"You have to feel it in your heart, it's not something you can explain," said another. "It's just about believing in God and believing in Jesus, who came to die for us, and trying to be better."

Dozens of people from several different Christian churches also walked a cross in Kanata, giving each person a chance to carry it.
