A retired teacher, Mahfouz has organized the annual Thanksgiving dinner for the needy at Sir Guy Carleton Secondary School for the past 17 years.
He earned a Community Builder award from the United Way in 2004 and was selected "Great Teacher" by Ottawa Magazine in 1995.
Mahfouz has a psychology degree from Carleton University and a master's degree in education from the University of Ottawa. He wrote "The Three E's Approach to a Healthy Lifestyle" in 2002.
He and his family have lived in Nepean for 25 years.
