Ottawa fire officials say hot weather is partially to blame for a fire at a compost processing plant in east Ottawa Wednesday morning.

Fire crews were called to the Orgaword facility at 5123 Hawthorne Road around 3:45 a.m. after a staff member noticed smoke coming from a large pile of compost.

More than 40 firefighters helped put out the smouldering material.

Orgaworld said drought conditions contributed to the fire since most of the yard and leaf waste in their facility is extremely dry.

Temperatures are kept high in that part of the building to help with the composting process.

There were no injuries and no damage.
