A B.C. man riding his bicycle across the country in honour of his mother's fight against breast cancer arrived in the Capital this weekend.
Keegan Hoffman's mom carries the BRCA 1 gene mutation. It is the same one that led Angelina Jolie to have a preventative double mastectomy earlier this year.
Hoffman began the journey after his mom, Wendy, was diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time.
“The gene is the BRAC1 gene mutation and it's a mutation that you inherit from your parents and just increases your chance of cancer,” Hoffman said.
His mom was able to join him for part of his ride and used it as part of her training for an Ironman competition.
“We rode for 7 days to Regina together and it was definitely great training for her and it was great for me to have someone to ride with,” he said.
Hoffman began his ride in Victoria, B.C. back in June and plans on finishing the race mid- to late-October in St. John’s, Nfld.
Hoffman has had nine flat tires since he started and carries about 100 lbs. of gear with him that includes a sleeping bag, pots and pans for cooking, a fishing rod and a ukulele.
Hoffman hopes his journey will raise $2,000 for the B.C. Cancer Agency.
Keegan has started a blog documenting his journey and accepting donations along the way.
