In an Ontario election that's been largely about the party leaders, the race in Ottawa West-Nepean has two local candidates front and centre.
Liberal cabinet minister and former mayor Bob Chiarelli is facing a tough fight against Progressive Conservative candidate Randall Denley, a former Ottawa Citizen columnist.
Both candidates have a history in the city and both have known each other for a while.
"A lot of people ignore Randall. . . because he is so negative about everybody all the time," Chiarelli said. "We don't pay a lot of attention to him."
"(He's) suggesting I didn't do a very good job as a journalist," Denley said.
He said the fact he left that newspaper job shows his commitment to the party and leader Tim Hudak.
"If I thought Tim Hudak wasn't the best guy to run for premier. . . I wouldn't have left a great job to run for him," he said.
Both candidates in the riding are facing criticism from voters at their doors, one of the signs the riding is very much up for grabs.
"I know you. . . I'm not voting for you," said one voter to Chiarelli. "You cost Ottawa too much money."
Others said they still hadn't made up their minds, ensuring a close race between the candidates for the final days of the campaign.
They're running for the MPP seat along with Wendy Byrne of the NDP, Alex Hill of the Green Party and John Pacheco of the Family Coalition Party.
