An Ottawa teenager has won the World Youth Chess Championships.
Qiyu Zhou, 13 took home the grand prize in the youth under 14 category at the international competition in South Africa. The Colonel By High School student is a member of the RA Centre chess club.
According to the Chess Federation of Canada, the talented teenager was the 2013 Canadian Under-14 Girls Champion and 2012 Canadian Under-12 Girls Champion. She also represented Canada at the 2014 Chess Olympics last August.
Zhou began playing chess at a very young age. By age four, she was ranked 4th in the French under 8 girls Youth Chess Championships. At five, she was the winner of the Finnish under 10 open Youth Chess Championships.
