It’s hard to say which is more remarkable.
A family of 14.
Or a family that has spent the past two years travelling in an RV.
The Kelloggs are both.
Dan and Susie and their 12 kids – all theirs, no twins or triplets – have packed in their old life in Glenwood Springs, Colorado and are now criss-crossing North America in an RV.
Kerri, Grady, Brody, Kady, Kenny, Dally, Cardy, Maddy, Rowdy, Emmy, Elly, and Coby range in age from 20 years to 20 months.
(Currently they have a little extra elbow room. Oldest sibling Kerri is back in Colorado.)
And the reason for this grand adventure? Would you believe kayaking?
The family members are avid kayakers. They bought the RV to lug their kayaks and gear around. Once, on the way back from a trip to Tennessee, they decided they liked their life on the road. So they rented out the house and have been travelling ever since.
“It’s so much fun,” says 12-year-old Dally Kellogg. “You get to go wherever you want, do whatever you want.” The only downside? Homework. The kids are home schooled.
Susie Kellogg says travelling with that many kids can actually be easier. In many ways they are their own support system. Mealtimes are a team effort. And large laundromats are actually faster than trying to do all that laundry at home.
To pay for it all, Dan Kellogg continues to work remotely as a software engineer. A small price to pay, he says, for being able to spend so much time with his family.
The family has visited over 20 states and is now touring through Eastern Canada. GoRVing Canada is assisting them while they are here.
They have logged over 44-thousand miles. But the best part of their adventure isn’t how far they’ve gone. It’s how close they’ve become along the way. “We thought we were close before we embarked on this journey,” says Susie Kellogg. And we are so much closer than we ever thought we could become.”
