Youth in Smiths Falls, Ont. rescued after falling through ice

Police in Smiths Falls are sharing a video of a dramatic ice rescue after a young person fell through into frigid waters Friday afternoon.

"Permission from the parent to post as an educational piece to please stay off the ice," police said. "This could have been tragic had this youth been alone."

The boy had walked out onto ice behind the Econo Lodge on Centre Street at around 2 p.m. when the ice gave out.

"The youth did exactly what he was supposed to- remained calm and listened to the rescuers. His friends did the right thing and called 911 telling our dispatcher where they were," police said.

Several emergency responders were on hand to help the boy get out of the icy water.

Police warned that despite the recent cold, the ice is not safe.

"Our waters around the town are often fast moving and don't always freeze," police said.
