An Ottawa teen faces street racing charges after a crash that killed 18-year-old Christian Williams in Barrhaven Tuesday afternoon. Police say two cars were driving at high speed down the street before the collision occured.
The star basketball player, just two days shy of graduating from high school, died after the car he was driving slammed into a concrete light-pole about 1:45 p.m. on Claridge Drive, near the intersection of Strandherd and Greenbank roads.
Williams was pinned inside his Honda Civic when paramedics arrived, with the light post on top of his side of the car. He was pronounced dead 15 minutes after paramedics arrived, while still trapped in the vehicle.
Grief at his high school
His death caused much grief and surprise at Mother Theresa High School, where the popular student was known as "Sisco." His Facebook profile lists 900 people as friends.
He had a really nice smile," said student Teassa Sekret.
"Some people couldn't even speak. It just came out of nowhere -- last thing anyone would think would happen."
An 18-year-old passenger was treated for a minor head injury and a fractured wrist, while the driver of the other vehicle, 18, faces street racing charges and driving without a license. His name has not yet been released.
