A 22-year-old man is dead after a hunting accident in the rural south end of Ottawa.

He was hunting for small game with a couple other family members when he was shot.

A 911 call came in from Dalmeny Rd. and 2nd Line Rd. in Osgoode at about 7 p.m.

“Patrol officers attended and found a male shot from a hunting incident and taken to hospital where he died from his injuries," said Marc Soucy, Ottawa Police.

The man was part of a hunting party of three, all related.

One of the three had a loaded rifle, slipped on mud, fell and fired off the gun.

“We’re not releasing the type of rifle or handgun," said Soucy.

There are conflicting reports about whether it was the man himself who accidentally fired the shot or his cousin following behind him.  At any rate, the blow was fatal.

In Ontario in the last 11 years, nine people have died in hunting accidents

*** UPDATE: On Oct. 12, Ottawa police said the incident was an accident and no charges will be laid.
