A 45-year-old man is in hospital in serious condition after his arm got caught in a printing press Thursday afternoon.

Ottawa paramedics say it took several minutes to extricate the worker from the printing press.

The man -- who works at a printing company on Richmond Road - was treated for serious injuries.

Paramedics say his hand, forearm and upper arm were crushed and fractured during the incident.

Workplace safety

In the meantime, the Ontario government ordered all employers to immediately stop using a worker safety device called a "shepherd's hook."

The Ministry of Labour's decision follows an incident in Cumberland where a hydro worker fell 30 metres to his death while working on a hydro tower on May 30.

Ministry officials re-enacted the man's fall and the investigation revealed shepherd's hooks can easily dislodge.
