Work has begun to build fences at the Prince of Wales rail bridge across the Ottawa River to stop trespassers.

The bridge is located along the Sir John A. Macdonald parkway in Ottawa and crosses over Lemieux Island just east of the Parkdale exit and extends over to Gatineau.

People have been walking across the bridge or using it for recreation.

Transport Canada ordered the city to block off the bridge.

The city has started to put up chain link fences at four entry points in Ottawa, Gatineau and on Lemieux Island.

The cost is about $50,000, much cheaper than the $250,000 gate system originally proposed by the city.
