A woman is homeless after a fire destroyed her high-rise apartment in east Ottawa Friday morning.

Ottawa fire crews said they responded to a fire on the tenth floor of a 17-storey building in the 300 block of Montreal Road around 11:30 a.m.

There were smoke and flames visible from the street as firefighters successfully kept the fire to that unit, although there was minor smoke damage to the hallway and minor water damage to an apartment below the fire.

The lone female occupant will be staying with family after the fire completely destroyed her apartment while she wasn't home.

Four other people suffered smoke inhalation and were tended to by paramedics.

Firefighters said there was an estimated $70,000 damage to the building and $20,000 to its contents.

The cause remains under investigation.
