PETERBOROUGH, Ont. -- A Peterborough, Ont., woman is facing several charges after her baby suffered severe brain damage.

Police originally began an attempted murder investigation in late August after a two-month-old child was taken to a local hospital with medical complications.

The baby was transferred to the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto and was found to have suffered severe brain damage.

The child has since been released from hospital and is being cared for by others.

A 26-year-old woman is charged with aggravated assault, failing to provide necessities of life for a child under the age of 16, obstructing police and failing to abide with a court order not to contact the baby's father.

No names are being released to protect the identity of the victim.
