The winning design for a national firefighters' monument in Ottawa will feature the names of more than 1,000 Canadian firefighters who died while serving their communities.

The design is the creation of Vancouver novelist Douglas Coupland and a Toronto architect firm. It was selected by representatives from the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation and officials from the National Capital Commission.

"This is a milestone moment," said Robert Kirkpatrick, of the Fallen Firefighters Foundation.

The monument will be located at Lebreton Flats and is expected to be complete by September 2012.

The foundation is in the midst of collecting and verifying names of all firefighters who have died in the line of duty since 1848.
