Residents of a quiet, middle-class Orleans neighbourhood are shocked to learn accused sex killer Col. Russell Williams is facing more than 30 new charges in connection with break-and-enters committed in the neighbourhood where the former commander of CFB Trenton lived with his wife for more than a decade.

Williams, 46, is facing 82 new break-and-enter-related charges in Ottawa, Belleville and Tweed after police forces reviewed unsolved homicides, missing persons reports, sexual assaults and break-and-enters in the region.

Ottawa police say many of the charges are linked to break-ins at more than two dozen homes in Ottawa's Fallingbrook neighbourhood.

"It's still an ongoing investigation and we're working on if there's anything else," said Const. J.P. Vincelette.

Laurent Clairoux, who lives in the neighbourhood, told CTV Ottawa three out of four of his immediate neighbours had their homes broken into and robbed of women's undergarments.

"I know the gentleman next door has a couple of computers. They didn't even touch the computer. This lady apparently had money on the dresser. They didn't even touch her money. It was just feminine lingerie stuff," Clairoux said.

He told CTV Ottawa the robber apparently broke into one of his neighbours' homes as she slept, and stole underwear and photos.

"Apparently she was in the house and she woke up the following morning and her underwear were gone," Clairoux said.

Williams lived in the neighbourhood with his wife for 14 years before the couple bought a home in Ottawa's trendy Westboro neighbourhood about two months before he was arrested for murder.

Williams now faces 34 charges linked to crimes in Ottawa, including:

  • 23 counts of break-and-enter and theft,
  • three counts of break-and-enter with the intent to commit an indictable offence, and
  • eight attempted break-and-enter charges.

Two break-and-enter-related charges were laid in Belleville, and 46 others were laid in Tweed.

Williams is currently behind bars charged with the first-degree murders of Jessica Lloyd of Belleville and Cpl. Marie-France Comeau, who was killed in her Brighton, Ont. home. He was also charged with two home-invasion sexual assaults in Tweed, Ont. that took place in September 2009.

Williams made a brief court appearance in Belleville on Thursday. Police say their investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact OPP, Ottawa police, Belleville police or Crime Stoppers.
