A warrant has been issued for a diplomat from the Saudi embassy in Ottawa, who fled the country and failed to show up for a court appearance on charges related to a collision that left an Ottawa police officer injured.

Marwan Al Harbi, 30, was scheduled to appear in court in Ottawa on Monday. He faces several charges, including criminal negligence causing bodily harm, assault with a weapon and assault causing bodily harm.

The charges stem from a short police chase on Ottawa's Colonel By Drive on June 2.

The chase ended when Al Harbi's vehicle collided with a police cruiser at the intersection of Bank Street and Heron Road. The officer involved in the crash received minor injuries.

Al Harbi's diplomatic card has since been revoked by Canada's foreign affairs department. If Al Harbi ever returns to Canada, he will be arrested and detained.
